Anyplace Wild: Mountaineering in Canada and Hiking in Scotland In “A Veritable Bugaboo,” Annie Getchell teams up with author and mountaineer Mark Jenkins to follow in the footsteps of famed Austrian climber Conrad Kain. They retrace Kain’s 1916 route on Bugaboo Spire in British Columbia. The rich tradition of mountain guiding and exploration in the region come to life through archival photos and a period re-creation. As the weather turns, a spectacular lightning storm engulfs the pair.
In “Highland Hillwalking,” Annie Getchell revisits the land of her forebears on a hiking trip through Knoydart Peninsula in western Scotland. This “man-made wilderness” was cleared of its inhabitants in the 1850s to make room for grazing sheep and wealthy hunters. Many of those who left ended up in Canada and the U.S., Annie MacNaughton-Getchell’s ancestors among them. Annie and renowned Scottish storyteller Cameron McNeish explore the cultural differences between their native lands.
